Colonization of the moon or Mars is possible — by many estimates — within 10 years. Yet there seems very little governmental or societal will to do so. Will economic incentives light the fires of our colony ships? Or will the super-rich mine asteroids with robots while the rest of us starve on a dying Earth? Will an existential threat to humanity like nuclear war or climate change push us into the stars, or merely tear us apart?
Space might be our destiny or an insurmountable wall which forever traps us. In either scenario, we're not prepared. Let's talk about what it would take to reach the stars, whether we even should, and if we reach the singularity before faster-than-light travel — does it even matter?
